In order for one to first examine themselves as a professional within their area of work, they first need to understand whether or not their occupation is considered a profession—a task that comes with an immense amount of conflict if you are a teacher. In most cases, the classification of whether or not an occupation is a profession is fairly black and white.
In the case of teaching, however, there seems to be a large debate over whether or not being a teacher is a profession. What is more confusing is the fact that some who believe that teaching is not a profession also admit that teachers need to constantly act like professionals within the classroom as well as in there professional life. That is why I feel that as a pre-service teacher it is important for me to examine my own professionalism reflection paper on professionalism in order to ensure that I act in a manner that does not compromise the integrity of my future occupation.
To begin my journey in understanding professionalism, I would like to start with examining what qualities make up a profession. Each one of these criteria brings plenty of discussion and conflict when teaching is concerned.
Through reading and self reflection, however, I have decided that being a teacher meets every one of these criteria in some way, and that teaching should be a profession. Some people believe that teachers do not have a unique body of knowledge, and that they only know information—this is an idea that I directly reject.
