If one goes strictly by the prescribed textbooks, it would appear that the history of the oldest surviving civilization began with the the Islamic invaders and ended with the British empire. Everything before that is either ignored, airbrushed or reduced to a footnote. This book precisely deals with the period before the advent of the Islamic invaders. Especially well researched is the so-called Indus valley civilization, which should be called the Indus - Saraswati valley civilization.
Having said that, some more light could have been shed on the glorious empires that thrived south of the Vindhyas. I guess that could be the subject of another book The language is simple and understandable by even the students who have studied in a medium other than English This is a valuable addition to any school or college library. A rare book on Indian History which makes you read from cover to cover in one go.
Sharma's writing not only reflects his knowledge, the depth of his research and passion for the subject but also his purpose of de-intellectualising it for all kinds of readers. The narration is such a beautifully woven mix of the facts and Mr. Sharma's storytelling skills, it is almost artistic, which is a rare feat to accomplish, even for well established authors.
History will never be boring again! There are fundamental problems in the conventional ways in which textbooks have presented Indian history: facts, dates, figures which altogether march to certain conclusions. What I found interesting in this book is the rich variety of historical documents to essays on indic history an alternative voice and interpretation, essays on indic history are not only engaging but also give a detailed comprehension of the period and time.

The author succinctly describes the historical timeline of ancient India uptil the Gupta period. It's written coherently, and the commentary is logical. The book will help you appreciate how many a things we do are influenced by the past even from the Harappan period. I learnt a lot from the book. Would recommend everyone buy this. I liked the anecdotes in the book, which connect our past with the present.
I found essays on indic history parallels drawn between Natyashastra and Bollywood very interesting. There is a reason why our films are so full of drama, songs and dance and now I understand why. Very nicely told stories of our own history, especially for non-historians to get gripped into past realities, in a way as if you are reading fiction!
